Terms of Use — Stoa

Welcome to Stoa. By creating an account and using the app, you accept these Terms of Use ("Terms"). If you do not accept these Terms, please do not use the app.

1. Publisher of the app

Stoa is published by Arthur Désirant, an individual based in Belgium. Contact: stoa.arthur@gmail.com

2. Purpose of the app

Stoa is a personal development mobile app inspired by Stoic philosophy. It offers:

A daily philosophical quote, with a personalized analysis
A voice mentor generated by artificial intelligence
A progress system (levels, streaks of consecutive days)
A social feature to add friends and compare progress
An optional Premium subscription with additional features

Stoa is not a medical, psychological or therapeutic service. The app offers reflection and personal development content for informational and inspirational purposes. It never replaces the advice, diagnosis or treatment of a mental health professional. If you are going through a crisis or serious psychological difficulties, please consult a health professional or contact the appropriate emergency services.

3. Minimum age and account creation

Stoa is reserved for people aged at least 13, in accordance with Belgian law on digital consent. Users under 18 must have the permission of a parent or legal guardian.

You are responsible for:

Providing accurate information when creating your account
Keeping your password confidential
Any activity carried out from your account

4. Content generated by artificial intelligence

The analyses, explanations and messages of the voice mentor are generated by artificial intelligence systems (in particular through our technical partner OpenAI) from philosophical quotes and the information you enter in your profile.

This content:

Is generated automatically and may occasionally contain inaccuracies
Is not professional advice (medical, psychological, legal or financial)
Should be understood as a tool for reflection, not as absolute truth

The philosophical quotes themselves are checked and attributed with the greatest care, but we cannot guarantee 100% accuracy for every historical attribution.

5. Premium subscription

5.1 Features

The Premium subscription unlocks additional features (up to 5 analysis listens per day, personal coaching, deep analyses, history and progress review, access to the whole quote collection, badge visible to your friends, exclusive mentor appearance).

5.2 Billing

Subscriptions are billed through Apple's App Store or Google Play, at the prices shown in the app at the time of purchase. They renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date.

5.3 Cancellation and refunds

You can cancel a subscription directly from your Apple account settings (Settings → your name → Subscriptions) or Google Play (Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions). Refund requests are handled under Apple's or Google's policy, not ours — please contact their support for any refund request.

5.4 Price changes

We reserve the right to change subscription prices. Any change will be notified before it applies and will not affect periods already paid.

6. Social feature (Circle)

By using the Circle feature, you accept that:

Your first name and identifier (handle) are visible to the users you add or who add you
Your progress statistics (level, streak, XP) are visible to your friends in the app
Your Premium subscription status is visible to your friends as a badge
You commit to using this feature respectfully (no harassment, insults or abusive behavior towards other users)

We reserve the right to suspend or delete any account used abusively towards other users.

7. Prohibited behavior

It is forbidden to:

Impersonate another person
Use the app for illegal purposes
Try to bypass security systems or access other users' data
Harass, threaten or harm other users
Automate the use of the app (bots, scripts) without permission

8. Intellectual property

The app, its design, its code and its visual elements (except public-domain philosophical quotes) are the property of Arthur Désirant. You may not reproduce, distribute or create derivative works from the app without prior written permission.

9. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by applicable law:

Stoa is provided "as is", with no guarantee that it is free of errors or interruptions
We cannot be held responsible for decisions made by a user based on the app's content
Our liability, if established, is limited to the amount paid by the user over the last 12 months

These limitations do not apply in case of gross or intentional misconduct, or where the law forbids them.

10. Suspension and deletion of accounts

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the app in case of breach of these Terms.

You can, for your part, permanently delete your account at any time, directly from the app (Profile → Delete my account). This deletion is immediate, complete and irreversible: your login account and all associated data are erased with no possibility of restoration.

Deleting your account does not cancel your Premium subscription: cancel it in the App Store or Google Play to stop being charged.

11. Changes to the Terms

We may change these Terms at any time. Substantial changes will be notified to you through the app. Continuing to use Stoa after notification means you accept the new Terms.

12. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by Belgian law. Any dispute falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Belgian courts, without prejudice to the mandatory rights you may have as a consumer in your country of residence within the European Union.
